Logan Urgent Care
Millions of people suffer from allergies in the US. Regardless of your efforts to avoid them, they always seem to find you. And some people can be totally unaware they have an allergy until it’s too late.
Abundant Family Practice provides convenient visits for acute illnesses, including asthma and allergy attacks. Chad Speth, your medical professional in Logan, is happy to speak with you about allergies and symptoms and what you should do when experiencing a reaction.
What are Allergic Reaction Symptoms?
Most allergic reactions are mild, while others can be severe and life-threatening. They can affect only a tiny area of the body, or they may affect the whole body. They can affect your skin, digestive system, airways, or nasal passages.
Pollen allergies or hay fever often cause sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes. Food allergies may include swelling, itchiness, and hives of the tongue and throat.
The most common symptoms of allergic reactions are:
- – Red, swollen eyes
- – Redness, heat, and swelling at the site of an insect sting
- – Itchy skin rash that covers the body or just one small area
- – Tingling, itchy or prickly sensation on the roof of the mouth
- – Stuffy nose
- – Swelling or puffiness around the lips and eyes
A severe allergic reaction may include the above symptoms, including a cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing. The most severe form of allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis shock.
What is Anaphylaxis Shock?
Anaphylaxis is a severe and life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical attention, most often triggered by allergies to food, insect stings, or medications.
Symptoms of this severe allergic reaction include:
- – Trouble breathing
- – Nausea and vomiting
- – Dizziness and feeling faint
- – Dangerously low blood pressure
- – Loss of consciousness
- – Widespread skin rash
- – Fast heartbeat
- – Clammy skin
- – Confusion and anxiety
Anaphylaxis shock can quickly lead to organ failure and even death.
Those with a history of anaphylaxis likely have an epi-pen. Use as directed during a reaction, and immediately call for emergency medical help. Consider getting a medical alert bracelet so that others know your treatment needs.
What Should I Do for an Allergic Reaction?
Skin rash
Your Logan urgent care suggests washing the affected area with lukewarm water and mild soap to remove surface irritants.
Remove and wash all clothing items if your itchy rash occurs after exposure to poison ivy, poison sumac, or other external sources. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams may help with mild itching.
Hives
Cool compresses can relieve discomfort caused by hives. If hives are widespread, take a cool or lukewarm bath. Avoid hot or cold showers or baths since these irritate hives. Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent further irritation.
Stuffiness and Weepiness
Most mild allergy symptoms respond well to over-the-counter antihistamines. However, you must carefully read labels since some medications cause significant drowsiness.
